Promoting a holistic approach to pre-braille
Using a holistic theme-based approach during the emerging stages of literacy development is an important strategy for children with visual impairment. It offers a multitude of rich literacy learning opportunities. The reading readiness pathway of auditory and language development, tactile discrimination, fine motor skills, concept development and book and story skills will provide the framework for this presentation.
Gwyneth McCormack will demonstrate how to incorporate pre-braille skills within the child’s emerging stages of literacy development. She will give you practical strategies, ideas and suggestions by using popular children’s stories, such as “Frozen”. This seminar will give you an understanding for the pre-braille pathway of emerging literacy skills and which types of activities you should use in order to develop pre-braille skills. You will learn how to incorporate and promote pre-braille skills and emerging literacy skills using a theme based, holistic approach.
